Making the Right Choice for Your Tanning Bed

Posted on July 27th, 2007 in Tanning Beds by Tanning Bed

Trading off the sun for a tanning bed because of your busy schedule? You’ve certainly made the best decision but wait, tanning beds, as innovative as they are, have variations. The trick here is picking out the one that best fits your style and preferences.

Tanning beds come in both big and small sizes. There are the huge and sprawling tanning beds one would typically find in the high-end salons and then there are the smaller and simpler ones normally seen in smaller salons and private homes. Following the size is the price tag. One could procure a tanning bed for as low as a hundred and fifty dollars while top-of-the-line models cost to as much as fifty thousand.

Tanning beds come in different forms as well. In commercial tanning salons, you will essentially find two forms of tanning beds. There is the vertical tanning booth and the horizontal tanning bed. They basically differ on the orientation of the tanner—as the name implies, the vertical bed has the tanner standing up while the horizontal bed has the tanner lying down.

Vertical tanning is usually a faster session. The tanner enters the booth and is showered with rays from all over. Tanning lamps are placed behind a Plexiglas as they cloak the body in UV rays.

In contrast with the vertical tanning bed, the horizontal tanning bed is more comfortable for the tanner as they receive the UV rays while lying down. The tanning bulbs can be found on top and at the bottom of the bed and the tanner slides in between them, the cover left ajar.

Some would prefer the vertical tanning over the horizontal tanning because they believe that they would have a more even tan with the former. With horizontal beds, some believe that their backs are getting more tanned up since when lying down, their whole weight is on their back making it more vulnerable to the UV-producing lamps.

Apart from these two commercial types of tanning beds, there is also one that is most suitable for home tanning—the canopy beds. The tanning bulbs are mounted into a canopy and radiate the UV rays to the tanner from the top.

If possible, it is suggested to try all the types before choosing which one is right for you. Up to this day, tanning beds still spark a lot of controversy because of the possibility of contracting skin cancer with abusive and irresponsible use. However, we cannot also discount the benefits and advantages tanning beds bring to our evolving society. It’s all about us being responsible consumers and keeping in mind the limits of these machines.

Tanning Beds Could be a Good Business

Posted on July 23rd, 2007 in Tanning Beds by Tanning Bed

Usually when one starts thinking about setting up a good business one will prefer the kind of business which will not cost so much capital to start. One also needs to study the business if there is a demand or market for that kind of business. People will ideally choose a business which has less money to invest in and less money for the expenses needed to maintain it.

A business with tanning beds can be the good business you are looking for.

Start with a good Location

As a start one needs to find a good location to set up the business of tanning beds. Most businesses for tanning beds are found in shopping malls. A location near a spa, gym or a health club can also be an ideal place for this business. Try to find a location where there are businesses that cater to the physical well being of a person since those businesses also have a similar market to the market of the tanning beds.

Establishing the tanning bed business near those businesses can raise the number of customers who can be continuous patrons of your business. Most clients of a tanning bed business aim to improve their physical appearance and well being. Some of the clients can also come there to have a relaxing time. It should also be a convenient and accessible place for your customers.

Upon getting a good start by finding a good location, purchasing or getting the tanning beds will come next.

In stocking tanning beds one needs to find the best companies or manufacturers where one can get the best price. There is a constant upgrade to most of the tanning beds to make them more competitive. There is also the option of leasing the tanning beds instead of buying them. Another side business besides the tanning beds are the tanning bed lotions, tanning products and the protective eyewear for tanning sessions.

Usually after filing the business tax permit or identification card, an influx of suppliers or retailers can sell you all the supplies one may need in setting up a good business for tanning beds. The proprietor or the owners will have a wide variety of suppliers to choose from.

Checking the related laws in one’s country or state is also important. There are certain certifications that other countries or states may require before opening the business. There are licenses that one needs to get for operating the business like licenses for the right and proper training for all the employees. This will ensure that the staff knows the sufficient knowledge of applying the tan to the clients. There are other licenses or permits one needs to acquire from the city health office.

These are the necessary steps one needs to research on when setting up a tanning bed business. Do not forget to ask the residents living in the location you want to establish if they would go to a tanning business. When one gets a good feedback from the residents of the area then the decision of opening up the tanning bed business should come easy.

Health Hazards of Tanning beds

Posted on July 22nd, 2007 in Tanning Beds by Tanning Bed

Tanning beds have gained so much popularity because they can give the advantage of saving money and time as well. A visit to the tanning salon can really be hard to keep with a busy working schedule. The cost for each tanning session can also be very expensive when added all in particularly for those who maintains a good tan skin tone.

There are many people who decided to just have the tanning bed at their home because they can afford it. However there were issues raised about the tanning beds at home. Is there truth that these beds for tanning could actually be a danger to one’s health?

The tanning salons and the tanning beds at home both use the artificial lighting to produce the UV rays which is important in getting a tan. Even though the lights or the bulbs are artificial and are made by man, these lights actually produce the same kind of light produced by the sun. Tanning beds were initially introduced in the market in 1978. It gained popularity quickly since it became possible to achieve tan for a year. Tans became possible all year round and weather did not become an issue anymore.

Those who like tanning beds claim that tanning beds are healthier and safer than the sun’s light because the UV light can be controlled. Sunlight is composed of two kinds of UV rays which can penetrate the human skin; these are the UVA and the UVB. The UVB rays burns the first and the top skin layer. This kind of rays can pose danger to one’s health. Modern tanning beds in salons and at homes have reduced the UVB lights by up to forty percent to prevent any health hazard the UVB can produce.

The dangerous effect of any tanning bed usually depends on how one uses it. For people with a fair type of skin it is recommended that tanning should be avoided this is because those with this kind of skin are more prone to the dangerous effects when exposed to UVB rays. Anyone using a tanning bed should also never fail to use a tanning lotion or moisturizer. These will give more skin protection from the rays and can bring back loss skin moisture while doing the procedure.

Many tanning enthusiasts like the vertical booths for tanning instead of the horizontal. Most people feel that they do not pose much danger to health than the usual horizontal tanning bed. The vertical tanning beds are usually seen in tanning salons. The vertical design has not yet been adapted for the home tanning beds. The vertical booths are also considered more sanitary because there is less contact of the body to the machine.

Benefits of Tanning Beds

Posted on July 21st, 2007 in Tanning Beds by Tanning Bed

Do you want a nice tan but you do not have the resources to hit the beach? A tanning bed may be the right choice for you. Beauty clinics or salons usually offer indoor tanning through the use of their tanning beds. If it is not possible to go sunbathing at the beach, these facilities can get you a tan that you desire.

Getting you a desirable tan is one obvious reason of using a tanning bed rather than going outdoors to bathe in the sun. Aside from being the substitute for the sun, there are other less obvious benefits of using a tanning bed.

Time Saving. You are at the beach lying in your beach towel bathing in the sun with the wind breezing its air and the waves lapping at the shore. This is the usual way that most of us remember about getting a tan. But let us face it, a considerable amount of time needs to be allotted for this activity.

Tanning beds eliminate this need to go to the beach. All we have to do is go to the nearest beauty salon that has a tanning bed. A session in a tanning bed ranges from five minutes to about half an hour. Compare that to going to the beach which takes about half a day at the least.

Availability. Weather can not always be sunny. Seasons change so it can not always be spring or summer. Even if it is spring or summer, there is no guarantee that the sun will always be shining.

Tanning in a tanning bed is not dependent on whether the sun is shining or not. As long at the beauty salon is open, you can get in there to get a tan.

Sunburn avoidance. Did you ever have sunburns because you have been under the sun far too long? Sunburns are one of the things that you have to contend with if you want to have a tan done the conventional way. The sun’s ultraviolet rays vary from minute to minute. This means that there will be parts of the body that may be overexposed to the sun.

The use of tanning beds minimizes the occurrence of uneven exposure. Sessions in a tanning bed are designed so that the skin will receive an even exposure thereby eliminating the possibility of sunburn.

Conclusion. There are a lot of benefits to be derived from using a tanning bed. You can save time by using a tanning bed rather than going to the beach. At any given time, tanning can be done even in the winter. It can even be done at night if you want to. It is available every time regardless of weather.

The Useful Tanning Bed Timer

Posted on July 20th, 2007 in Tanning Beds by Tanning Bed

It’s a known fact that tanning under the sun or using a tanning bed can also cause burns on the skin. It could also lead to the danger of getting skin cancer. This great risk can be lessened greatly by making sure the tanning bed’s timer works properly.

The owners of tanning salons have the responsibility of making sure that the tanning bed’s timer works well. Some of the big tanning salons can have a computerized system where one bed is connected to another tanning bed and the operator needs to simply switch the bed on. The system will control the timer for all of the tanning beds and it will turn the tanning bed off when the timer automatically stops.

The timer of the tanning beds can be considered as the most important factor in fighting the risk of skin cancer. There should be a regulation for one’s exposure to UV rays so the timer exactly assists in doing this. Many doctors advise to start a session with a maximum duration of five minutes and then increase the time at the next session. This should not be done in just one day. One session each day can make a tan look better. It results in a glowing and even skin appearance and improves the health of the skin.

Tanning makes the melanin’s presence very evident. Melanin is the pigment that is produced by the human skin when it gets exposure to the sun’s UV rays. Melanin protects the skin from getting burns. Naturally the human body needs at least three days to give off enough melanin thus creating a good and even tan. Just one day will surely not give the desired result. Tanning is still a method naturally done by the skin. Spending a longer time in the bed will not make it any faster.

FDA Requirements

In 1979 the Food and Drug Administration gave the regulations for tanning beds. They made the necessary standards. Later on the tanning bed industry created bulbs that emit UVA rays. The timer of the beds also had adjustments to prolong the time exposure.

The Food and Drug Administration cannot recommend these tanning beds because for them a single burn on the skin can also lead to the increased risk of getting skin cancer. They emphasize the use of the timer and while tanning do the necessary precautions to ensure safe tanning and avoid getting burns. The FDA asks companies making tanning beds to give the consumers necessary guidelines in the regulation of the timer.

But in the end it is up to each person to ensure their own safety. So make sure the timer always works before starting to get that perfect tan.

Want to Get a Tan?

Posted on July 19th, 2007 in Tanning Beds by Tanning Bed

Tan is a perfect color for the body. It is neither too pale nor too dark—just the right hue that is pleasing for anybody to look at. Traditionally, we soak ourselves in the sun for ridiculously long hours, exposing our body parts not only to the sun’s harmful rays but also to the strangers’ scrutinizing eyes.

Now, getting a tan is not as troublesome as before—thanks to this brilliant invention that is the tanning bed! But how exactly does the tanning bed work?

A tanning bed, also known as sunbed, is a device that produces a tan on our skin by mimicking the sun’s emission of ultraviolet radiation, the UVA and the UVB.

The UVB is perceived to be more harmful than UVA as it burns the upper layers of the skin causing sunburns. The UVA, on the other hand, only penetrates the lower layers of the skin, stimulating the production of melanin which is known as the brown pigment that causes tanning.

There are a few tanning beds in the market called “high pressure” beds. These units are supposed to emit mostly UVA with very minimal UVB. However, they are harder to find and priced more costly. The regular tanning beds has several fluorescent lamps, ranging from twelve to twenty-eight lamps for the home tanning beds, and twenty-four to sixty lamps in the tanning salons, that run on one hundred to two hundred watts of power. These lamps contain phosphor blends used to emit UV in a spectrum that is much like the sun.

The time one spends on the tanning beds is relative to the quality of the tanning bed they are using. Maximum exposure time is around twenty minutes where a novice usually starts off in quick sessions and progresses to the maximum exposure time in a matter of about four weeks. It is advised that users of the tanning beds ask the “Recommended Exposure Schedule” from their tanning salon or their merchandiser to guide them in using this machine. Improper or careless tanning could cause you some irreversible consequences on your skin such as skin cancer.

Salons and individuals who own tanning beds for private or commercial use must also not over look maintenance. When replacing worn-out lamps, it should be the exact or the legal counterpart to ensure your safety when using the tanning bed. In the US, lamp replacement and salon compliance are regulated by the state governments, and the manufacture and sale of new tanning beds must be cleared first by the federal government.

While using a tanning bed is very convenient with almost instantaneous effect, one must also remember be careful and protective of their skin. Before lying down into this numerous bulbs, don’t forget to put on your goggles and some lotion and never to fall to sleep during the process! It also pays to be responsible in making ourselves look better because we don’t want to end up regretting our actions just to look prettier.
