Making the Right Choice for Your Tanning Bed

Trading off the sun for a tanning bed because of your busy schedule? You’ve certainly made the best decision but wait, tanning beds, as innovative as they are, have variations. The trick here is picking out the one that best fits your style and preferences.

Tanning beds come in both big and small sizes. There are the huge and sprawling tanning beds one would typically find in the high-end salons and then there are the smaller and simpler ones normally seen in smaller salons and private homes. Following the size is the price tag. One could procure a tanning bed for as low as a hundred and fifty dollars while top-of-the-line models cost to as much as fifty thousand.

Tanning beds come in different forms as well. In commercial tanning salons, you will essentially find two forms of tanning beds. There is the vertical tanning booth and the horizontal tanning bed. They basically differ on the orientation of the tanner—as the name implies, the vertical bed has the tanner standing up while the horizontal bed has the tanner lying down.

Vertical tanning is usually a faster session. The tanner enters the booth and is showered with rays from all over. Tanning lamps are placed behind a Plexiglas as they cloak the body in UV rays.

In contrast with the vertical tanning bed, the horizontal tanning bed is more comfortable for the tanner as they receive the UV rays while lying down. The tanning bulbs can be found on top and at the bottom of the bed and the tanner slides in between them, the cover left ajar.

Some would prefer the vertical tanning over the horizontal tanning because they believe that they would have a more even tan with the former. With horizontal beds, some believe that their backs are getting more tanned up since when lying down, their whole weight is on their back making it more vulnerable to the UV-producing lamps.

Apart from these two commercial types of tanning beds, there is also one that is most suitable for home tanning—the canopy beds. The tanning bulbs are mounted into a canopy and radiate the UV rays to the tanner from the top.

If possible, it is suggested to try all the types before choosing which one is right for you. Up to this day, tanning beds still spark a lot of controversy because of the possibility of contracting skin cancer with abusive and irresponsible use. However, we cannot also discount the benefits and advantages tanning beds bring to our evolving society. It’s all about us being responsible consumers and keeping in mind the limits of these machines.
