Can Artificial Tan Be Washed Away?
After spending about twenty minutes in a tanning bed, a person may be sweating profusely and he will need a shower. But should he shower? Won’t he need to wait at least three hours before taking a shower? Won’t the new tan be washed away by the water? Of course not. The new tan will not be washed away by water. To remove this myth of having the tan washed away, we must understand what actually happens in the skin when exposed to the ultraviolet rays.
When exposed to the sun or the tanning bulbs, the skin reacts to protect itself from the ultraviolet rays it is receiving. The skin’s method of protecting itself is to produce the melanin pigment. The melanin helps prevent sunburn and other results of overexposure to the ultraviolet radiation. And the melanin is responsible for the color of the tan.
The production of melanin pigments may be fast, but their presence may not be detected immediately. This is because the melanin is produced just beneath the surface of the skin, and within the skin’s epidermis. The melanin pigments will take about twenty-four to forty-eight hours to travel to the surface of the skin. This is why a natural tan takes about the same amount of time to develop.
Then, after about four to eight weeks, the outermost surface of the skin gradually flakes off. This flaking off is a natural process and results in the appearance of new skin. Of course, when the skin flakes off, it takes the melanin pigments with it. This means that after about the same amount of time, the results of your indoor tanning have faded. You may want to use the tanning beds again.
As for spray tanning, the substance responsible for the tan is not melanin. It is an organic complex that remains on your skin for a relatively short period of time. There has been no study yet to prove or disprove the idea that the artificial tan from spray tanning will be removed by water.
But so far, the organic complex does not dissolve in water. This implies that a shower will not really affect the tan. The tan of spray tanning just fades faster because the organic complex is removed once the skin flakes off.
When the skin is being tanned, it will need to be hydrated so that it can keep showing a radiant sun-kissed tan. Therefore, after using the tanning bed, it is most probably a good idea to take a shower as soon as you wanted to.
