Cancer Threat From Tanning Beds
Roughly 1 million Americans seeking a "safe" tan at their local tanning salon is just as risky as sun-tanning, according to a research.
The research found out that salon exposure can cause damage in the cells of the skin which may potentially result to skin cancer.
Skin and blood samples were taken from the unexposed areas of the skin.
The result showed that the participants developed alterations in some
parts of
their DNA and some skin proteins because of too much exposure from the
UV bulbs of tanning beds.
It was determined that molecular changes increases the bed-tanner’s chances of having skin cancer just as risky as those who lie under the sun.
This disproves the claims that tanning in suntan salons is safe. More exposure
to tanning beds increases the risk of skin cancer.
Theoretically, tanning beds may be safe. But in reality, commercial tanning
beds may be accident-prone.
Two tanning bed problems may be related with two different types of radiation.
Firstly, X-ray emission from the ends of both bulbs. Shielding the last inch of the bulb with the use of lead tape can prevent X-ray radiation from the bulbs.
The second problem is EMF emission coming from the magnetic ballast in most tanning beds. These magnetic ballasts is responsible for the humming effect of tanning beds.
EMF emission causes a rapid drop the farther you are from the ballast.
In a tanning bed, The magnetic ballast is just several inches away from
a person
To remove this problem, replace the magnetic ballast with a quiet but more
efficient electronic ballast which can be purchased at any electrical supply
store and installed by any electrician.
Anyone can construct a safe tanning bed. The market is rich for health-conscious
entrepreneurs who can distribute a “safe” tanning bed.
There are still options you can use to be protected from the sun or going on a vacation and that is – by limiting initial exposure and avoid getting sunburn.
The rays of the sun are most intense during 12:00 (non-Daylight Saving Time).
Avoid staying out of the sun from 11 to 1.
There are really many options in beautifying the skin. The market offers
a lot of tanning lotions. The best option is by consulting your skin doctors.
If you are really intent on using tanning beds, be informed with its effects
or hazards.
