A Survey of Tanning Bed Users
In April 2004 in Atlanta, Georgia, the results of a market research was published. One of the goals of the market research is to determine the awareness of tanning bed users of the health benefits and risks of such indoor tanning technology. The subjects of the research are three hundred randomly-selected men and women. Here are the highlights of the results of such market research.
1. Ninety-five percent of surveyed users of tanning beds actually knew the risks of using tanning beds. This is contrary to the belief that most tanning bed users are unaware of the dangers of using tanning beds. The same users also recognize that sunburns can be avoided by being reasonably careful in utilizing this technology. Thus, these users refrain from overexposure to the ultraviolet radiation.
2. Ninety-four percent of surveyed tanning bed users claimed that they should consult a doctor, a pharmacist, a health professional, or even the salon manager before they attempt to use the tanning bed.
They are aware that people who take prescription drugs may have made their skins more sensitive to ultraviolet radiation. They know that some medications may increase the risks of using tanning beds. And this is why they are careful to read warning labels.
3. Eighty-five percent of surveyed tanning bed users are confident that tanning salons provide sufficient precautions and safety measures for their customers. Such tanning salons keep their equipment clean and in top condition to ensure the health of their clients. These tanning salons educate their clients on how to properly use the tanning beds. They also remind their clients that overexposure to ultraviolet radiation can lead to sunburns and skin cancer.
4. And about fifty-five percent of surveyed tanning bed users trusted that indoor tanning is far safer than outdoor tanning. This is because the amount of ultraviolet radiation released in tanning beds is more controlled than direct exposure.
At the same time, this percentage of regular users realizes that there are benefits derived from tanning beds. The foremost is the production of the much needed vitamin D. People who suffer from the deficiency of vitamin D due to lack of sun exposure will certainly get more benefits than a tan from tanning beds.
Based on the results of the market research, it is clear that the majority of regular and frequent users of tanning beds and tanning salons are composed of people who are responsible and aware of both the health benefits and risks from using tanning beds.
